An Overview of our Learning

Students across the whole school have been celebrating Harmony Week in art by participating in a whole school art project. All year levels (and teachers too!) are working on a self portrait with a focus on correct positioning of facial features by exploring our own faces. We examined the positions of features in relation to each other, dividing the face into quarters, running fingers from our eyes to the tops of our ears and along our hairlines. We celebrate the diversity of our students in a variety of styles from realistic to cartoons and Manga. These portraits are being collected and our art captains have been working hard to collate them together in a banner which is displayed outside of the computer lab. Our banner will grow as everyone finishes their pieces so that we can grow together in harmony.

Preparations are also being made for an outdoor mural as a permanent celebration of our cultural diversity, and a show of respect for everyone who calls Australia home. Thank you to the art captains and helpers for their ongoing contribution to this work.

In week 7, Students are continued to develop painting skills, learning to control the paintbrush within a defined area and keep their colours bright. Foundation students completed their colour monster drawings by painting colours we often associate with a variety of feelings.

In week 7 students have used their knowledge of line and shape to invent a shape robot using oil pastels. These colourful inventions further develop students skills in drawing and painting, holding the pastel correctly, using watercolours to achieve the best outcome with bleeding and adequate water to blend colours on the page.

In week 7 students began drawing an aerial view of a special place to them as a reflection of the Indigenous landscape paintings examined the previous week. Students are using google earth to find their location and using their knowledge of line and shape to draw the structures and features.

Year 5 and 6 students have been adding the finishing touches to their paintings with fantastic results. These artworks demonstrate an excellent understanding of the elements of art, incorporating value, colour, shape and space.
