Konnichiwa, minasan! (Hello, everyone!)

‘YOKOSO’ (Welcome) to the Upwey South Japanese Room!

The following are the Japanese activities our students worked on during week 7 and 8.

Foundation:

Foundation students are accustomed to responding to the greeting question: ‘genki desu ka (How are you?)’ and answer with either ‘genki desu (I am well/good)’ or ‘genki janai desu (I am not well)’. In addition, they learnt ‘pun pun desu (I am frustrated/angry)’ and ‘kanashii dsu (I am sad)’ with animated and dramatic gestures with the help of ‘genki’ monsters. The students love trying the new phrases to see Masae-sensei’s reactions! Moreover, Foundation students learnt 7 animals through the 2 new animal songs and created an origami animal from the songs. Great work!

Year 1&2

In term 1, Year 1 and 2 students continued to familiarise themselves with the family vocabulary. They also learnt the counters for people with the help of the ‘samurai-counting song’ and the number chart with the counter ‘人’ (Kanji character meaning person/people). The students applied their knowledge into practice by addressing their family members in Japanese. Keep up the good work!

Year3&4

Year 3 and 4 students continued to develop their knowledge on the 12 adjectives. They made good use of their original adjective list and practised them by making a sentence such as ‘… is cute’ and ‘… is scary’ in Japanese. The students had lots of fun playing the ‘Blooket’ adjective game in groups to enhance their ‘Hiragana’ reading skills. Great job!

Year 5&6

Year 5 and 6 students started working on their ‘Bilingual Manga Project’ to showcase their knowledge on the ‘Manga’, ‘Anime’, Japanese script and the phrases which they learnt over the past years. Although some students struggled to adjust the way the story starts (from the right to the left), most of them loved researching on ‘Manga’-style drawing and making funny and dramatic stories. Fantastic effort!
