Inquiry Overview

During Term One we have had a Civics and Citizenship focus with the unit leaning towards the Rights and Responsibilities of Australian citizens. Students have been investigating the three levels of Government, what they are responsible for, understanding the difference between rules and Laws and moving into increasing knowledge of what the United Nations is all about. Watching weekly sessions of BTN is increasing students awareness of what is happening in the world around them and focusing on current affair topics.

Some of the key questions that we are tuning into are:

What is democracy?

What is the purpose of government?

What are the roles and responsibilities of the three levels of government?

What are the key features of the Australian electoral process?

What is citizenship?

What is the role of the United Nations?

Swimming

During this week our year 5 & 6 students have been travelling down to Knox Leisureworks, to complete their 5 day swimming program. Although this has made our week seem a little longer, the students attending have been put through their paces by learning different strokes, further developing survival skills and hopefully having a bit of fun at the same time. As always, its been great being part of integral personal growth of our students well being and water safety development.

Here are a few happy snaps from the week:

Chess Tournament

Part of our Year Six transition program in Term One, the students have been learning how to playing chess and participating in a Chess Tournament. As a group we discussed 'Why' we would be learning and playing chess during transition. Some great thoughts were shared during this session. We then moved through the pieces and how they move. Check out the poster below of the reasons why the students thought Chess was a good game to learn.

We are now up to the final few rounds with 8 kids in the final rounds. Good luck to all the students and we would love to say a huge CONGRATULATIONS to our Chess Champion.

Check out the kids playing one of the rounds.

National Day of Action against Bullying

On Friday 18th of March it was the National Day of Action against Bullying. This years theme is KINDNESS CULTURE - It starts with YOU! Attached below is the slide show that we all went through. Continuing on with this, we developed a Student Shout Out wall. This was such a beautiful experience as students wrote a personalised shout out to another student in the class. Once all were collected (and ensured that all students got one) we read them out to the class. The reactions were priceless. They were so grateful for positive comments and for being recognised for just being themselves. These shout outs will be included in our classroom well being sessions.

During our Wellbeing session in Week 7 we also discussed what are Nice / Kind things to say and what are some things that we may say that are not 'helpful' comments. In 5/6A this is the class list that was developed:

Harmony Day

On Tuesday 22nd of March, our students celebrated Harmony Day and Cultural Day by dressing in clothes which represented Harmony (orange) or colours of the culturally heritage. What a great day it was celebrating all the difference we have within the classes. Our 5/6 classes undertook a Harmony Day trivia, linking the discussions had back to what this day is all about followed with completing some mindfulness colouring in.

JMSS Enrichment Experience

This week was our final session of the John Monash Science School (JMSS) Enrichment program. Thank you to everyone who took part in the program... we learnt so many amazing new things and can't wait to see our mentors put their skills into practice when they run lessons for their peers in Term Two.

THANK YOU

Melissa, Zoe and Llewela would like to extend a big Thank You to all parents for the support you have given your child and our school during Term One. We are excited with what our students have achieved during this time and we are all looking forward to a positive and continued pattern of growth in Term Two. Have a great time during school holidays relaxing with your loved ones.

Take Care.
