YR10 COMMERCE MOCK COURT PLEA HEARING

On Thursday 12 May, the Year 10 Commerce cohort enjoyed a train trip to Melbourne Central for a scripted role play at Old Melbourne Gaol’s adjacent courtroom, the Old Magistrates court.

We were provided scripts and with nearly all students having an opportunity to speak in roles of an accurate reenactment of a “culpable driving” (vehicular manslaughter) plea hearing. It involved a judge, a tipstaff, prosecuting and defence lawyer and many witnesses.

Our guide, Tom, provided further details about the actual case after the role play was completed. Our class was also asked to discuss and determine a possible sentence for the accused in either an adult prison or youth detention based on the evidence provided.

A special thanks to our Commerce teacher, Mr Evans.

YEAR 12 BUSINESS MANAGEMENT

In Business Management, we are currently learning about waste management in a production line and strategies on how to remove it. In today's lesson, we left the classroom to perform a practical paper plane activity. At the beginning of the lesson, we began to form two groups in the class and practice our waste management strategies.

As the lesson progressed Mr Graham challenged us to minimise as much waste as possible and convert as many pieces of paper into paper planes as possible, applying the theory we learnt to this practical activity.

I think this was a significant change to the nature of general classes and it definitely engaged my peers a lot more than being in the classroom while also allowing us to extend the learning we would have had inside of class.

This activity was very valuable for our learning as we are able to actively learn the practices of waste management physically and there was little to no confusion when it came to applying the practices in person. We then came back into class and put it all together in a group activity.

This activity really helped visual learners like myself to understand how the practices are used, I'm sure in our next SACs we will remember the strategies we were using during the activity. So far Business Management with Mr Graham has been one of the most enjoyable classes I've taken, and I'm sure anyone who is lucky enough to have him would agree! The subject itself is very content heavy but the breakdowns of each lesson help us improve on our mistakes effectively.
