Junior School

Year 1

The Year One students have done a fantastic job settling into their new classroom and a new year of schooling. They have enjoyed renewing their friendships from last year and two new students have been warmly welcomed into the class. After spending the first week settling in the students have jumped straight back into learning and have just finished a Maths unit focusing on place value.

Place value is the numerical value of a digit based on its position within a number. When taught in year 1, place value is taught up to hundreds.

The students have engaged in lots of hands on activities to help practise their skills related to this topic. These included building numbers with MAB blocks, using place value flip charts and drawing numbers on their individual whiteboards.

We finished off the unit by making place value flowers which demonstrate all that the students have learnt. These will be included in this year’s student portfolios.
