School Council President

On Monday night your school council got together online. This was the final meeting for the 2021 school council. I would personally like to thank each member of the team for their time and hard work through what was another tough year.

Next month we will start fresh and form the 2022 school council. As always there are some people moving on to new places and opportunities and so vacancies on council are created. This is a great chance for new people to get involved in the running of our wonderful school. An email has gone out this week calling for nominations and if you have ever thought about serving on council, I highly recommend you take the opportunity to nominate yourself, or even just ask some questions if you are unsure.

As always at council meetings it was wonderful to hear about the hard work and activities going on around the school!

We spent some time looking at the (nearly) completed plans for Phase 1 of our government funded building works…there are some details still to be approved. This has been an eye opening process as we have realised that $6 million is not as much as it sounds and that Phase 1 will be all about making our school compliant and water tight. While the plans are more modest and more about new roofing and toilets than the visions we were having of new classroom designs and other additions, it is a necessary and much needed first step. Many exciting things are going into the plans for Phase 2.

We also heard about the amazing start our students have had to the year. The staff and teachers are always great at getting the kids settled and engaged, and right now we have some extra help from Jiran who is ‘on loan’ to us from the Blackburn English Language School. Please say hi and make Jiran welcome if you get the chance.

At the end of last year, school council approved the continuation of our Wellbeing Officer Nicole. We felt that especially now, her skills are an incredibly important addition and Nicole has done an amazing job supporting our students and families. Council were asked to approve the Wellbeing Officer role for this year as this position is one of the wonderful items Weeden provides that is not funded by the Government. So please support this program and have a chat to Nicole anytime you need some assistance or just to say hi and let her know how much we appreciate the important work she does.

A few final thoughts for this month: Spread the word that Nokuna and School Stream are essential reading for parents to keep up with the latest at Weeden Heights; check out the new shade sails over the senior school playground…they look amazing; and please consider nominating for school council!

Take care of yourselves and stay safe everyone.
