SAKG

Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden

What fun we had in the kitchen last Monday! We had a Mexican theme last week and celebrated all things Valentine’s day.

The students made red kidney bean quesadillas which a lot of them had never tried before. It was great to see all the students trying the quesadillas even though they were not sure they’d like them.

Moreover It’s exciting to see their tastebuds change and adapt to new flavours.

The heart shaped jam shortbread was a hit and all the students loved them!

In garden, we have been very busy planting seedlings and starting seeds.  We have lettuce, bok choy, radishes, peas and wombok planted already among others and can't wait for them to grow.  We harvested figs this week from the trees and hope to be able to harvest more in coming weeks.

Thank you to the families who have already returned notices to volunteer to care for chickens.  It is a really special part of the SAKG program and we are so lucky to have had such wonderful volunteers over the years.  We are not able to purchase new chickens without having enough volunteers to ensure they can be cared for, particularly over weekends.  The care of the chickens can be completed in approximately an hour.  Families can be rostered each week or on a fortnightly basis if that is more suitable.

Please do consider volunteering to care for 'the girls' as is it very rewarding and enables the whole community to enjoy this wonderful aspect of the Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden program.  Please get in touch with Belinda Davis at school if you are interested.
