YEAR 7 Introduction to the ‘5Ps’

The ‘5Ps Student Learning Framework’ was formally introduced to our newest additions to the College earlier this term. The Year 7s participated in a variety of induction activities, which included being introduced to the 5Ps framework by members of the Year 9 and Year 12 Leadership teams.

The Year 7s learnt that the term ‘success’ could be measured in many ways, as success is a highly subjective concept. However the ingredients to achieving success tend to invariably revolve around students being Productive, Persistent, Prepared, Present and Proactive.

The student leaders ran a variety of activities with the Year 7s, which had them explicitly thinking about what ‘5P’ actions could be taken to solve problems they may encounter at secondary school. Aminah El-Omari, who is the Acacia Campus Student Voice Leader, led one of these activities. She said she was proud of the Year 7s in her group, as they were able to decipher the meaning of each of the Ps, then apply the learning behaviours to a scenario they were provided. Aminah described how her group managed to work with their peers to turn a difficult situation into a learning opportunity.

Year 7s students Naura Alioglu and Aston Gobbett, who participated in the induction session described their experience:

“It was good to use our time to make sure we know the 5Ps and how we can use them” said Aston. Naura continued to state that “I see the 5Ps as good habits to have in our daily lives. They can help us contribute to our communities as well as ourselves”.

Well done to all the Year 7s involved in the event. On behalf of the Year 12 and Year 9 Student Leaders, we hope you have had a pleasant transition to the College and wish you a PRODUCTIVE Term 2!

With excellent effort, Quynh received the Arts Achievement Award. She is now doing a double degree in Bachelor of Business and Design. We are proud to have had Quynh as our student here at Keysborough College. We wish Quynh all the best of luck her future endeavours.

KIOSC- EXCURSION INTO THE WORLD OF FORENSIC SCIENCE

On the 18th of March, the STEM program students of both Acacia and Banksia went to KIOSC, run by Swinburne University, to go through a murder-mystery experience. The experience started with an introductory presentation by Leanne, prefacing forensic science as a whole and the different parts of forensic science. TJ then took over, explaining the mystery that the students were then tasked to solve. It was a simulated murder with multiple ‘stations’ that replicated the process. The first stage was the ‘field’ that consisted of the crime scene and the pieces of evidence found on the site. We were able to learn how to fingerprint things using different types of powders (fluorescent, black and white) to dust them. The second stage was ‘biological’ which involved taking in the living evidence and testing it, such as; taking blood samples, using a polygraph machine (which is a real lie detector) and looking at fingerprints and comparing them to the suspects’. Lastly was the ‘analytical’ station that consisted of drug testing, pen ink testing and analysing fibres under a microscope. We all had to record our information collected from these stations and discussed with each other to find out the culprit of the murder; of course, it was the ex-girlfriend.

YEAR 10 ACMI EXCURSION

Since remote learning, where students we’re forced to make their own learning spaces, where their worlds became little bubbles; Art students who thrive off building understanding and connecting to the world around them, could no longer gather inspiration, from being in a physical space to experience an artwork, a film, or the physical locations of the places we live. Since returning to school, it has been incredibly important to give those experiences back to the students, enable self-guided exploration for inspiration. An integral component to art education is allowing students to explore their own ideas through finding inspiration to guide their practice. Yet with remote learning… well that makes those ten times more difficult. So last Thursday the Year 10 Media class from Acacia had the opportunity to travel into the city to explore ACMI, the Australian Centre of Moving image, including a special screening of Victoria’s season of Excellence candidates at Top Screen. The day started off with a screening of student’s short films from Top Screen, held at the beautiful Capitol Theatre, run by RMIT university. They saw a variety of different short films, from animations to live action horror thriller films.

“I liked the Top Screening, as I got to see different films that we’re made by people not much older than me.”

Students are currently in the process of developing their own short films, seeing short films developed by other students broadened their perceptions of the work they could some to create, and was a source of inspiration for several of them as they develop their storylines.

“It was nice to see all the films people made, some of them really told a story and was inspiring. We got to learn from other students’ short films to get an idea of what we could do for our own.”

After their time at Top Screen, students moved into the ACMI exhibition, “The Story of the Moving Image”. They we’re enthralled in the history of film and tv. Moving through the space they witnessed the development of how film started, the progress into colour film with a heavy focus on Australian film and tv. With new additions introducing the production stages and more behind the scenes development of some famous films like Blade Runner and The Lego Movie. Some spaces we’re dedicated to costuming and foley sound, as well as the much-loved Gaming section with the changes over the decades from Arcade Pac Man to Virtual Reality Headsets. The Simpson Arcade game becoming the most loved by students.

In their classes leading up to the excursion, students we’re in the process of developing a mini film or scene that they could film during their time in the city. They we’re given prompts such as “The Moon that feel from the sky” or “The day that time stood still” Writing a screenplay and storyboard during class time they had the opportunity in the city to film their scenes for their mini film. Their final hour in the city, they became filmmakers, scouting locations, directing their actor’s, and aiming their cameras for the perfect shot. All in all, students we’re excited by the opportunity to leave the classroom and experience film and media in a new light. They have re-entered the classroom on Friday, with new and fresh ideas with more enthusiasm to develop their films and stories which opened many enlightening discussions on film.

LIBRARY NEWS

There is always something happening in our libraries. You’ll find quizzes, games and of course books - but the latest craze is jigsaw puzzles.Students in all 4 of our libraries have been enjoying the challenge and mindfulness that jigsaw puzzles offer, working together with other students to get it done and feel that sense of achievement.

At Banksia these puzzle sessions have been taken to the next level with the ‘2022 Jigsaw Challenge’. The race is on to see which library can complete the most puzzles in the year. Will it be Junior or Senior? Currently it is the Senior students out in front, having already completed 5 puzzles to the Junior student’s 3. However, after a slow start the juniors are catching up quick, so only time will tell who will come out on top, with the winners set to get ultimate puzzle bragging rights!Check out the photos of some of the puzzles completed by the students so far this term.

LOTE Chinese

Time flies, everyone! Another 6 weeks passed and it comes to the end of Term 1. Our Year 7 students finished the Chinese Spring Festival project. Just check our students’ work with their creative learning in papercutting, colouring, and handicraft making.

Our college wide Year 8 students had an incursion for the bilingual puppet show The Jungle Book performed by Carrousel Theatre puppeteers at our Banksia Theatre. This fun activity aligns perfectly with our junior beginning learners’ bilingual literacy skills in listening, reading and viewing. We’ve also got Carrousel Theatre puppeteers’ thanks to us about our hard work and lovely hospitality.

What’s more, we also had a fantastic open night welcoming our future parents and students to walk in our LOTE classrooms. These families enjoyed communicating with our LOTE Chinese teachers and their most favourite part was the warm tea on that raining night. These lovely families highly engaged in our different activities such as puzzles, using chopsticks, writing Chinese calligraphy, etc. Just too many choices to choose the best!

Golf Australia Get into Golf Program was delivered to Mr Brews Year 10 Field sports class to over the past 2 weeks.

Coach Linda Shannon has praised our students for their excellent behaviour and positive approach to learning. She said “ All students were polite, friendly, helpful and many were keen to understand the technique of the golf swing to hit the ball further and straighter.

All the girls and some of the boys enjoyed our putting session with many learning that speed of the ball is more important than just direction! “

Thanks to Mr Brew and his fabulous class !

Harmony Day is a time where Australia celebrates multiculturalism and what it brings to our society. Australia is a flourishing country with a diverse range of cultures and it was an important opportunity to celebrate this.

Here at Banksia, the VCAL class of 2022 produced and presented activities for the school to participate in during the week. A wooden photobooth frame was handmade by two students in the class, with many students taking the chance to snap a polaroid memento of the day. Two of our Year 12 students entertained audiences by performing music in the genre of heavy metal and rock during our lunch break and chess tournaments were active during all three days of our school’s Harmony Week.

On Tuesday 22nd March, a group of the VCAL students compiled novelty sport games for the lunchtime activities. I would say it was a great success, a lot of students participated in the fun challenges. It was an enjoyable week because I could see our school community coming together.

My friends and I had custom VCAL 2022 Harmony Day shirts made by my uncle. He included our culture’s flag on it, to show our heritage proudly. I really enjoyed seeing others in their traditional cultural dress too. It was a great opportunity to see how they wanted to express themselves and take pride in sharing their cultural identities with others in the school.

Digital Thumbprint

Year 8 students visited Dom and he came to talk about cyber bullying and online safety. Most teens or young adults have been bullied online in media, this could lead to fights or friendship breaking down or dusted away. So Dom taught the Year 8 students the strategies to prevent cyber bullying. This was a shocking, surprising and educational experience.

ArtVo

The Year 8’s visited ArtVo, an art-illusion, Trippy, fun experience. This excursion is for the subject English and it will give inspiration to students on Poetry. ArtVo is located at Melbourne District and students take a tour on a immersive “trick-art” gallery of optical illusion art that will blow student’s mind away. Later students went on a 30 minute walk to Melbourne Central to grab some lunch, it was painful and tiring. This was one of the most enjoyable excursions we had all year!

Alcohol (Smashed)

Smashed was a group of people that came together as a team to teach young kids/teens about alcohol, drugs, underage illegal activities and it’s safety. The team did a really fun but also informative play to the year 8’s that show cased what dangers alcohol brings if it was used illegally and irresponsibly. We learnt about, how underage drinking can affect us and the people around us, how illegal it is and much more. We were put in various situations and were given time to think as a group what we could safely do in the situation to help ourselves and our friends. It was a fantastic experience.

Camp Kangaroobie

On March 28th 115 year 7 students went to camp Kangaroobie from the Acacia Campus. It took three hours to get there and we were all very excited when we got there. At camp Kangaroobie there are lots of activities. These activities are, Canoeing in the river, running around in the bush, going on a farm trip, a game of survivor. We also played a game called ‘Life or Death’ where you’d run around in the bush and play a massive game of tiggy with water guns. We got to play trivia at night time, and learn lots about the farm. The food was delicious. We had lots of food such as baked potatoes and sausages. The year 7s had an amazing time and we enjoyed the awesome experience! We hope you enjoy the photos.

Hello Everyone,

Today I’ll be telling you all the fun things we did during camp! The first thing we did when we arrived at the camp was get sorted into our rooms. Now this part was definitely what we were all waiting for. We then afterwards has a quick snack and went off to our first fun adventure. These adventures could’ve been mud run, canoeing, life or death, get lost or going on a farm trip to see all the animals. The first thing I personally did was go on a farm trip. It sure was a fun ride hoping onto the trailer and going off on a steep road. It was like a roller coaster! Afterwards, we had some time to ourselves. I personally liked this because the cookies and biscuits they made were absolutely scrumptious! Especially the chewy Anzac biscuit. After that, we were off to another adventure. The next adventure I had was canoeing. It was a pretty fun activity except for the fact that my shoes and I were absolutely drenched in water and sand. In canoeing, we did things such as racing back and forth, getting to the other side of the lake and heaps of other fun stuff. Then we had delicious dinner served by the duty group. Then later, we had 1 hour of time to ourselves. I remember me and my friends hanging around the adorable dog and spending the remaining time in our cabins. We then decided to end the night off with a movie called Ratatouille and also had a choice of some board games. Then off to bed we go. The next morning we woke up and had some breakfast (obviously). I remember the breakfast being so good and tasty that i even wanted more! Then, we were off to another fun activity. The activity that I had was the mud run, AKA the obstacle course. In my opinion, that activity was sure fun, but sure messy and scary. We had to go through all types of scary things including going through a really tight space with leeches, tiger snakes. frogs, spiders and all types of insects! Me and my friends all screamed during the process of doing these obstacle courses but also got the worlds longest time of all. Then, of course we had a break and went back to another fun activity. The next thing I did was get lost! Get lost was a super fun activity going through all types of fun adventures! One of the things we did was having to put a ball through pipes with eachothers help. From this activity i feel like we definitely bonded with one another and definitely learnt some teamwork. To make sure we weren’t gonna get lost, we had walkie-talkies and a gps. Then we had a lunch break and then once again had another activity. At this point we were all so tired but still had to get through one more activity until we reach the end of the day. The final activity for the day was life or death! This activity was pretty fun although i did get many splinters and bites from i don’t even know what insects. The aim of this activity was to get as many lives from other people being a carnivore, omnivore, disease or an hunter. During this time, we were all pretty scared because these was an animal on the loose! I briefly remember two people actually getting lost in the woods! What an adventure. We then had dinner and finished the night with an amazing trivia night. Another day finally over. The next morning we had to pack all of our stuff and then had to get all of our rooms checked. After our rooms being officially checked, we grabbed some lunch and off we were back to school. That was basically the end of our fun adventure at the Kangaroobie camp site. We’ll sure miss you Kangaroobie!!
