Urban Harvest, VCAL Community Volunteering

Every Tuesday afternoon, Urban Harvest students across Years 11 and 12 VCAL are volunteering at the Greenbrook Community Garden.  The first session involved an important OHS induction, where our VCAL students showcased their understanding of safe work places when working in a community garden. During the second session, students rolled up their sleeves, put on their safety vests and dirtied their hands .

Students had an opportunity to put their employability skills to the test, working in small teams to complete hands-on gardening and maintenance jobs around the community garden. Urban Harvest students powered through the ‘job list’ prepared by Sunny (Sunshine Cross, Whittlesea Council’s Community Development Officer), and by the end of the afternoon: three garden beds were weeded, reconditioned, dug over and watered; the mulch bay area was cleared, levelled, weeded and rubbish and rubble removed and stacked for collection; and fruit trees nets were removed and nets and tools packed back into the shed. Next week, students are getting stuck into jobs that need be done for the beginning of autumn, planning a companion gardening guide and planting out seedlings.
