Mathematics: The Hidden Mystery to Appreciate the World

When we engage the young minds in a creative process, their perception to see the world around them changes. When I was a student, I used to believe that math was all about rote learning inscrutable formulas to solve abstract problems that did not mean anything to me.

Mathematics is not about mindlessly crunching numbers but rather forming new ways to see problems so we can solve them by combining insight with imagination. It is a sense that allows us to perceive realities which would be otherwise intangible to us. Mathematics is our sense for patterns, relationships and logical connections. It is a whole new way to see the world. It is not always about finding the correct answers but learning to ask the right questions.

The mathematics Learning Area is now embarking on a new venture to make Math practical, applicable and enjoyable. Below are some pictures where year 9 students are investigating about “pi”, one of most talked about topic.

Special thanks and appreciation to Jemma, one of our new Math teachers for taking up this initiative. All year 7-10 students are encouraged to take advantage of this tutor program.
