Basketball at SKiPPS

sharing some key information

One of the most visible and positive parts of our school is our students' passion and skills in basketball and the high levels of involvement in training and after-school games.

For new parents, it can seem hard to know how to get involved.

Nikita Jain, our parent volunteer basketball co-ordinator, has written some key information below to help clarify a few things;

Basketball teams at SKIPPS are managed by volunteer parents, competing in various local sporting competitions. While the teams may play under the school’s name, Basketball is not part of the curriculum or the school’s formal Physical Education Program and the teams are completely separate from the school.

SKiPPS Teams

We have a range of different 'SKiPPS' teams for all year levels 1-6 who train on the school courts before and after school based on a roster developed by the coordinator in partnership with the team managers. Each team has one Manager (parent volunteer) who communicates with the coordinator throughout the year. (exchange and return of Uniforms, training at the school site, rent of uniforms, etc). Each team has a coach, either a parent volunteer or hired externally by the team. Teams are registered with playballbasketball.com to play Inter-school games as per Playball’s fixtures.

If a newly arrived student is keen to get involved in basketball, they are encouraged to make contact with the managers of the existing teams at their year level to see whether they need more players. See the table below for details on the current teams and contact details for their managers.

Forming a new team

Anyone looking to form a new team needs to have a minimum of 5 players, a coach, and a team manager. Once this is in place, the parents should reach out to the basketball coordinator to secure a training spot and to organise the hire of the uniforms.

Basketball Uniforms

To represent SKiPPS, parents need to hire the SKiPPS basketball uniform from the basketball coordinator. Uniform hire is at $20 per uniform per year. For players leaving the school who want to keep their uniform, the charge is $30. This is deposited in an account managed by the basketball coordinator and a parent treasurer.

The School’s approach is that children do not wear their black SKiPPS basketball uniforms to school during the day. There are several reasons for this but the main three were;

  • As the uniforms are rented and belong to the school, we wanted to reduce wear and tear by limiting them to basketball games.
  • The basketball singlets do not conform to the school's sun smart policy which states that all shoulders should be fully covered.
  • For some students not part of a basketball team, the uniforms can appear exclusive.
