STEAM

STEAM is the integrated teaching and learning of Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Mathematics. It is currently at the forefront of educational practice across secondary education, university and TAFE sectors in conjunction with Industry leaders such as Westpac, BAE Systems and Johnson and Johnson. International research also indicates that 75% of the fastest growing occupations now require STEAM skills and knowledge (Australian Chief Scientist, 2014).
Year 8 students have started developing their enterprise skills through the Makerspace Unit. They have participated in a variety of “hands on” activities such as the Paper Plate Roller Coaster Challenge and Straw Bridge Building challenge. They have worked in collaborative learning teams of approximately three students in roles such as Project Manager, Engineer and Technology Specialist to complete the various complex problems solving tasks. Students have also developed an e-portfolio of their learning which has been shared through Canvas. Parents are encouraged to view the inquiry tasks through Modules on Canvas and to view their tasks through Canvas.
The upcoming challenges involve making magnetic oobleck, building a water vessel and creating a robotic arm. We look forward to seeing our students developing their skills.
