Year 8 Cultural Day

On Monday, Mater Dei Year 8 students celebrated Culture Day.  Students were exposed to variety of workshops and activities; exploring Aboriginal, Japanese and French culture. The day began with some student representatives delivering an Acknowledgement of Country in 3 different languages; English, French and Japanese. A delicious French morning tea was served to all, with croissants, baguettes and other pastries from the local French Artisan Baker – Bernard Hoff.  Students then rotated through activities to enhance their knowledge and understanding of a variety of cultures including: Sumo wrestling, French Art, Japanese Origami, French language games and finally a workshop facilitated by Mr Jolley on Aboriginal Artefacts. In this session students explored our collection of Aboriginal artefacts, and how this technology was developed, and perfected over thousands of years. They examined the archaeological discoveries of the Mungo Lakes region, and how this changed perceptions, and added significantly to the body of knowledge about ancient Aboriginal peoples and societies.  Finally, students had the opportunity to demonstrate their appreciation and understanding of Indigenous technology, by throwing a number of different types of boomerangs.

Congratulations to the Year 8 French students who organised and coordinated a variety of French stall and activities at both Recess and Lunch to engage the entire College community in ‘all things French.’ A huge Thank you to Mrs Kirsty Fuller, Mr Jason Jolley and Mr Don Huckel for their support, organisation and contributions to the day.

Joyeux Noël,

Ms Emily Paul
