Inquiry Centre

Curriculum

Halo semuanya - Hello everyone! We have had a fantastic week in the Inquiry Centre. The teachers have seen wonderful enthusiasm and creativity from the students throughout this week.

In Mathematics we have been learning about Place Value. Students have been using different concrete materials such as icy pole sticks and MAB blocks to make different numbers and demonstrate the “value” of each number. Students have also really enjoyed mini games and challenges such as reading and saying large numbers using a random number generator.

In Writing, students have been working on their ‘sizzling starts’ by learning how to interest a reader using strategies such as opening with character dialogue or interesting sound words such as “boom” or “crash.” Students completed a Big Write which saw them provided with an opportunity to showcase these skills after engaging in Home Talk to generate ideas. We thank you for talking with your children and engaging with the writing prompt pictures this week. It makes such a difference to their ideas and excitement for each topic that is sent home.

In Guided Inquiry this week, students looked at developing a growth mindset. This has involved turning negative self-talk into positive - using words like “yet.” For example, students have been able to change “I can’t do this,” into “I can’t do this yet,” changing their mindset into one that promotes growth and self-belief. Students were encouraged to think of an action or activity that makes them feel worried and draw a picture of themselves engaging in the activity. Students were encouraged to come up with a strategy that makes the activity less daunting. In doing this, students are engaging in a growth mindset and looking at ways to overcome fears and try new things.

For demonstrating curiosity this week when learning about place value. You used your icypole sticks to make and compare two digit numbers. Amazing Addison!

1/2M: Mason S -

For demonstrating a love of learning in Mathematics this week. You constantly challenged yourself to try new numbers and increase your knowledge of place value. Well done Mason!

1/2SS: Elspeth M -

For demonstrating a love of learning when reading. Your responses to questions shows your higher level thinking and understanding of texts. You always listen carefully and contribute to discussions during literacy sessions. Super effort Elspeth!
