Independence Centre

Curriculum

Selamat tinggal!

We had another great week in the Independence Centre last week!

In Literacy we focused on clarifying unknown words and phrases in various texts. Writing sessions saw students being introduced to the Writing process and were guided through it to write their first narrative for the year. They focused on tightening tension and creating a build up of excitement by using figurative language throughout. Once the draft was completed, students used editing wheels to check over and up-level their work. We were very impressed with students’ work and can’t wait to read more this week as we continue our focus on narratives. Please note we will be sending home a Big Write prompt today (Home Talk). Students are expected to discuss their writing ideas at home in preparation for our writing session on Wednesday.

In Maths students developed their number sense by learning to accurately place numbers on a number line. They were introduced to the term ‘scale’ and applied this understanding to ensure all their markings on the number line that increased by the same value were of the same length. Students were also challenged to represent a chosen 3-digit number and represent these in different ways without actually writing the number for a partner to work out.

Wellbeing sessions introduced the concept of Inner Coach and Inner Critic and highlighted the importance of positive self-talk. In Science, students participated in an experiment to see if and how different parts of plants transport water. They noted down their hypotheses and will compare them to the results we see this week.

NAPLAN - Year 3 and 5

To ensure a smooth transition for the upcoming NAPLAN tests in May, students in Years 3 and 5 will undertake a practice test in late March (date TBC). The data from the practice test will not be used for assessment purposes but to familiarise students with the format. Over the next week or two, please ensure all students in Years 3 and 5 have downloaded the NAP Locked Down Browser App or have updated it to its latest update.

We hope you all have a brilliant week and look forward to seeing you at Twilight Sports!
