Leadership Centre

Term 1 Week 6

Curriculum

Week 5 started off with a bang as Year 5 and Year 6 students jumped straight into their Leadership Days on Monday. Our Year 6s enjoyed a full day of interactive workshops where they collaborated with peers to investigate themselves as leaders, solve problems, develop goals and action plans, co-design our school vision, and learn how we use our character strengths in our leadership. Our Year 5s enjoyed a Let’s Talk information session with Miss Nelson which has led many of our students to becoming Let’s Talk Mentors for our school. They collaborated in small groups on how they can bring a First Nations’ perspective into our Leadership Centre. We all found it interesting to learn about the history of the significant First Nations’ events and they are looking forward to sharing this knowledge with our community throughout the year.

This week our novels flew off the shelves and demanded to be read! Well, not really, but this is an example of personification, where an author gives a human quality to a non-human object. Students learnt about the literary device of personification in Guided Reading sessions with their teachers this week, and how different literary devices can be employed to engage the reader. They also collaborated on text responses that evidenced the skills of visualising, summarising and synthesising - high level comprehension techniques that double as important life skills.

Throughout Writing last week, students continued working through the Writing Process, stepping through the stages of Drafting, Conferring and Revising and Editing. ‘Show, Don’t Tell’ and ‘Exciting Endings’ were our focus elements of the Seven Steps for Writing Success, which guide students towards using figurative and descriptive language using the 5+1 senses. Our authors have been working hard towards their writing goals that they set for themselves earlier this term, with many gathering evidence of their progress in their Goals books. Students will be publishing their writing soon, so keep your eyes peeled!

Maths Masterclasses were back in Week 5, with students joining a specialised group lesson tailored to their goals and needs in Mathematics. Run across the Learning Centre by all six Year 5/6 teachers, students explored many aspects of Number and Algebra, Measurement and Geometry and Problem-Solving in their Masterclass. Across the week we also explored Fermi Problems which are ‘real life’ style problems that are not straightforward to solve. Students have been working on their Excursion plans

The big event for this term is of course our camp to The Old Priory in Beechworth, March 29th- April 1st. During the week, students received an information pack with updated information. Please take the time to read this information with your child as there is important information for everyone to be aware of. These forms need to be returned to school by Monday March 7th. For any concerns or questions about our camp, please contact your child’s teacher via Sentral.

Wishing you all a wonderful week,

Mrs Brisbane, Miss Walker, Miss Campbell, Ms Bennetts, Mr Burrill and Mr Dix

NAPLAN - Year 3 and 5

To ensure a smooth transition for the upcoming NAPLAN tests in May, students in Years 3 and 5 will undertake a practice test in late March (date TBC). The data from the practice test will not be used for assessment purposes but to familiarise students with the format. Over the next week or two, please ensure all students in Years 3 and 5 have downloaded the NAP Locked Down Browser App or have updated it to its latest update.
