This week the students have been learning about Aboriginal Sand Art. Sand painting and drawing have been part of Aboriginal culture for thousand of years and still are.

 

The sand art tells stories about the dreamtime and creation, marking country and recording history. The students were shown a selection of symbols which are used in a variety of mediums, including sand art, and had a go at drawing these symbols in the sand with sticks. They were then encouraged to design their own symbols to tell or draw a story in the sand. Here are students from 4T and 5M drawing symbols in the sand:
