Year 6 Report
We welcome you all to Term Four with mixed emotions.
What a year it has been.
Developing deep connections with each and every student is an absolutely vital aspect of a successful Grade Six year, and this year we have had to do that through a computer screen for a lot of the time.
Consequently, this term, we want to focus on re-connecting with each other and deepening the bonds that are so critical to effective teacher-student working relationships.
It is both an exciting and sad time: we are excited to see your children move on to the next phase of their lives, but we are incredibly sad after this extraordinary year to say goodbye to such a wonderful group of people.
In Reading this term, the students will be given various speeches written by past students and famous people to expose them to ways to write a speech. In addition, a significant focus this term will be engaging the students in reciprocal reading, where they will be reinforcing their ability to use the strategies of predicting, clarifying, summarising and questioning while reading.
In Speaking and Listening, your children will share their opinions with their peers and show appreciation of the viewpoints of others. They will also create reflective texts, which they will present to their peers and teachers.
In Writing, we will focus on recounts. The students will be writing many retrospective pieces covering the entirety of their primary schooling. Each student will then compose a final text, some of which will form part of an oral presentation at graduation.
Mathematics will involve the students continuing to refine their skills with division concepts and equations. They will solve problems relating to area by using a formula, and learn how this differs when working with triangles. The students will use place value concepts to assist them with renaming, ordering and skip counting numbers, as well as when working with fractions and decimals. They will continue to work on converting units of measurement in length and will learn about the relationship between volume and capacity. In addition, the students will explore the transformation of shapes and the construction of pyramids and prisms.
This term, our Inquiry focus will include the students participating in a modified Economics unit of work focusing on looking at the difference between a 'need' and a 'want.' We will assign weekly tasks to identify different things and actions that fit in the 'need' and 'want' categories. The students will also engage in a Primary School Reflections mini-project revolving around their past seven years in Primary School in preparation for the transition to Secondary School.
Additionally, the grades will take an active part in the organisation of their graduation, which will include speeches, PowerPoint presentations and student awards.
