Year 2 Report

Term 4

Welcome to our wonderful Grade 2 families! We have survived another term, majority of it spent learning remotely. We've made it to Term 4 and we are so excited that we will spend the majority face to face!  This term we also welcome Mrs Sylvana Awada who has replaced Miss Paloma as the teacher of 2A - we are very excited to have Mrs A on the team! Term 4 is going to be busy full of learning, but we really want to place an emphasis on the students social and emotional wellbeing this term especially after everything we have all dealt with this past 18 months. There are no updates as yet for The Grade 2 Sleepover, but we will update you as soon as we can!

Mathematics

In Term 4 our Mathematics focus is Place Value, particularly modelling, reading and writing numbers up to 999. Concrete materials such as bundling sticks, tens frames, MAB blocks, number lines, 100s charts and place value charts will be used to support their understanding of 2 and 3-digit numbers.

Students will develop their skills telling the time using an analog clock. They will focus on reading and representing o’clock, half past and 1/4 to/past time on digital and analogue clocks.  Fractions will be taught in conjunction with time by linking fraction concepts to a clock face eg. half past is halfway around an analogue clock face and quarter past/to involves dividing the clock into quarters etc.

Our Math's lessons continue to aim to engage the students learning of concepts and skills through games, hands on activities and technology. There are opportunities for students to participate in whole group and partner work as well as focused small groups.

As always, it is very important that the skills we teach in the classroom are continued at home. Activities such as practicing skip counting on the way home from school can further support your child in achieving their academic potential.

For the remainder of the term, we will be learning about statistics, and volume and capacity. As always, it is very important that the skills we teach in the classroom are continued at home. Activities such as ordering the price of items from the shop or when looking at numbers being able to tell you how many hundreds, tens and ones.  Giving you child as many opportunities to tell the time, even connecting it to the daily routine ie at 7:00am we get up, at 7:30 we have breakfast etc. Fractions with food is always an easy was to practice the skills in real life.

We aim for students to learn that Maths be can fun and necessary for their day to day life!

English

In Term 4 our Writing focus will be been exploring the text structure and language features of persuasive texts. Students will develop an understanding of the structure and organisation of a persuasive text and there will be a strong focus on developing their persuasive language. Students will be encouraged to write a persuasive text using the correct structure and language features, clearly stating their opinions on a topic and supporting their opinion with reasons.

During Term 4 in Reading, Grade 2 students will be developing an understanding of authors purpose and point of view. Our students will also be focusing on authors craft. Students will be identifying the techniques authors use to engage the audience and will be applying these skills to their own writing.

Students will continue to be exposed to a variety of literature during our reading sessions which will develop their understanding of persuasive texts and help to build their emotive language vocabulary.  Students are given time to practice their individual reading goals during daily independent reading time.

Please continue to support your child's literacy skill development by reading to or with them each day or by providing them with access to books and audio books to further develop their accuracy and fluency.

Inquiry

Our Inquiry topic this term is Where in the World are we?

In this unit, we will be answering these questions;

  • Where in the world are we?
  •  What are the key features of Australia?
  • What are the natural environment areas in Australia?
  • How can we look after our country?

Throughout the unit, Students will explore places across a range of scales within Australia (local and national) and Australia’s location in the world. They will learn to understand a globe as a representation of the Earth on which Australia and other familiar countries can be located. Students will learn where the location of major geographical divisions of the world (continents, oceans) are in relation to Australia. They will locate natural and constructed features, of places on a map and explain how they may change over time and how they can be cared for. Students will need to identify and describe the natural (hills, valleys, farms, parks) and constructed features (roads, buildings) in Victoria.

They will learn to locate the features on a map and significant landmarks throughout the country.
