Year 7 Women in History Expo

On Tuesday 4 June, Year 7 students at MGSC held an expo night on famous women in history. Each individual student researched and created a presentation of ‘a room of one's own’ on their chosen women. The Women in History Expo was a assessment task, but it was one of the most interesting assessments we’ve had. I learnt a lot from my chosen woman, Nancy Wake. As well as other women which included Helen Keller, Rosa Parks, Anne Frank and many more.

Nancy Wake was my chosen subject, and she was a secret agent during World War II who saved several Frenchmen escaping from France. I was truly inspired by all the details of her early life and escapades, and was fascinated with her wartime story, her determination, passion and bravery. I learnt that Wake was a person who didn’t want to actually be famous for saving people, she just did things the way she wanted to and did it in the background.

On the Expo night many people dressed as their chosen historic woman. Not necessarily wearing exactly what the women wore, but something that linked to them. I saw many other fabulous displays.  Someone doing Cathy Freeman had a life-sized image of her. Someone doing Rosa Parks made a big cut-out of a bus. Another doing Coco Chanel brought all sorts of primary sources that linked to Coco Chanel to create ‘a room of one's own’. The night was absolutely stunning and I could tell how much effort everyone put in to this task.

The assessment task enhanced our knowledge on women who have achieved and done great things in their lives. It was a really fun experience.
