The division carnival takes place this Friday, 6th September at Albert Park and we wish our students all the best on the day. Thank you to Julie Nield and parent helpers, Heidi Skillen and Bron Weingott for their hard work in running the discus and Claire Brooks for her support in crowd management on the day. Big congratulations must go out to Jo Ritson, the success of the day is a credit to her and her P.E/sport program here at Ripponlea.

ART ROOM UPDATES: 1&2

Year 1&2's will soon conclude their Jean-Michel Basquiat studies. Their project was to re-create the famous work Pez Dispenser (1984) using materials and techniques of their choice. After completing some experiments using charcoal, pastels, texta and grey leads, students then evaluated which material was suitable for their recreation. During this study, students learnt about the characteristics and style of Jean-Michel Basquiat’s work while also learning about his life in New York City, rubbing shoulders with the likes of Andy Warhol. Each of the student’s masterpieces contains Basquiat’s signature items: the crown and SAMO (Basquiat’s street art name).

ART ROOM UPDATES: 3&4

According to the art education philosopher Herbert Read: children from ages 11-14 develop an ability to draw realistically, moving away from abstract and cartoon drawing. This is an important stage in children’s development as artists because they begin to understand how to represent depth and perspective. This term, students in year 3&4's are learning the fundamentals of landscape drawing and painting. We are learning how to create a three-dimensional illusion on a two-dimensional surface. Understanding that objects in the foreground appear larger than objects in the background is important

in capturing this illusion. Students have drawn on inspiration from Indigenous artist Albert Namatjira to give them some ideas for their own drawings.

Students will paint their landscapes once their drawings are complete. They will be required to mix their own colour pallet and in preparation for this have completed a series of colour mixing trials and swatches ready for the painting to begin. Stay tuned for the work in progress on this project.
