Library News

The ELC children love to visit the Primary Library where they have the opportunity to borrow each week as well as participate in Guided Inquiry sessions. The youngest members of our community are also supported by some of our middle primary students during their library lessons. Buddies share the love of reading and complete activities together throughout the year.

The green room have been looking at artists. This prompted us to do an art activity with our buddies last week. We used our powers of observation and aptitude to “have a go” at drawing our buddies. The results were fabulous.

With the last of the warm weather, we encouraged some of the upper primary classes to take their reading outdoors.  Anywhere is a great place to read.

In the Senior School several year levels have begun their guided inquiry assignments with topics ranging from food security to pop culture. This style of learning encourages the boys to expand their knowledge of information sources instead of just googling it.

In the Senior Library we provide the following options that can benefit students whatever assignment they may be working on.

Gale Virtual Reference Library -  The GVRL is a database of encyclopedias and specialised reference sources for multidisciplinary research: http://go.galegroup.com/ps/start.do?p=GVRL&u=sa_bfriar it is also divided into several sections making it easier to navigate your way to the research topic you require. They can all be found on the library website here: http://blackfriars.libguides.com/bps/research

ClickView – This is a library of thousands of videos on many different topics. Ranging from medieval history, to fitness analysis and mathematical problem solving. Students are provided with their own workspace, can create playlists of relevant material and upload their own videos. http://online.clickview.com.au/SignIn

Vertical File – A collection of topical newspaper articles collected and stored in subject folders within the library. With over 100 topics it is a great place for students to start getting ideas for inquiry-based assignments. Many of these folders have been digitised and can be located and viewed through our library catalogue Oliver: http://library.bps.sa.edu.au/oliver/main.do

Periodicals – we subscribe to a variety of magazine resources that are available for borrowing from the library. Titles include: Time, National Geographic and New Scientist. Library staff also scan and upload any relevant articles from these publications to Oliver for easy access when studying at home.

Books – The library maintains a quality collection of up-to-date book resources that should never be overlooked when researching. Often we group those needed for currently studied topics in tubs behind the circulation desk. Students can access these at any time and photocopy any relevant information. During high usage times we do not allow them to be borrowed so they may be shared equally among classes.
