The children enthusiastically taking photos of the visiting lizard

Early Learning Centre

In the Yellow Room we have borrowed many animals over last term and this term. Our favourites include a Turtle, a Bearded Dragon and a Scorpion. We also focused on animals with Mrs Wilson during our Guided Inquiry sessions in the library. We researched many interesting Australian animals such as the extinct Gastric Brooding Frog, the Cassowary and the Perentie. We have also had some very fortunate experiences with animals in our room such as the yabby shedding its skin. This only happens once per year and one of our families brought in a baby kangaroo which they found on their farm.

The interest in animals has become evident in all aspects of the children’s work such as measuring; which began with measuring the length of the Perentie. The children measured themselves, their friends and anything else they can. They have progressed to a variety of measures including weighing and temperature. The children have made many animals with construction equipment and represented animals in their drawings. Our room is also interested in taking photos of the animals. One of our parents, who is a photographer, showed the children how to take photos of the animals. We have linked the interest in animals with Aboriginal culture and talked about bush tucker and shared many Aboriginal stories such as “Tiddalick” the frog.
