The boys enjoyed their secret missions when FYI Education visited this week

From the Primary School

As the middle of the term hits us so does winter with its chilly and often wet mornings. It is a good time to remember that if your son is at school before 8.15am that he should be booked into OSHC where it is warm and there is someone to watch him as we do not have teachers on duty until 8.15am.

We have had a lot happening in the Primary School lately. Last week saw the first of our mid-year Reception transition visits, there has been a number of classes on excursions to the Art Gallery and Museum and this week we have been visited by FYI Education. This is a program that is based around the National Curriculum Health and PE strand. Each class has been on a secret mission chosen by their teachers that links with what they are learning in class. Their mission, once they chose to accept it, was held in an inflatable classroom that popped up in the Primary Library.  Here are what some of the boys from R/1S and 3P had to say about their mission.

“I learnt to eat healthy food.” Lincoln H R/1S

“I learnt to eat good food.” Asher SR R/1S

“We learnt about how much sugar is in everything. Yogurt has lots of sugar.” Josh N R/1S

“We learnt that some medicines can kill you and hurt your lungs.” Tarquin F 3P

“We learnt medicine” Oscar B 3P

Sustainability in Action

Many classes have been looking at sustainability this term. 5LW have been working on caring for God’s creation through implementing a compost system and a Nude Food Day. Here is what they have to say about how they have put their plan into action.

Nude Food

In Religion this term, we have been looking at God’s creation and how we can help it to last as long as possible. Some of our class have been looking at doing a Nude Food Day.

The nude food group from class 5LW is planning to have a Nude Food Day every Wednesday starting Week 6. Nude food is where you have no rubbish and you have everything in a container, or if you bring rubbish from home could you please take it back home. You can get the nude food lunch boxes/ containers at the local supermarket.

Thank you, from the Nude Food Group Year 5LW.

Composting

This term in Religion, we have been talking and studying about God’s creation and how we can protect the Earth by picking up rubbish and keeping our environment clean. We have been working on picking up a lot of rubbish on the ground and it has been very good for our school and the environment and at our school we love the environment. Our class has decided to take this one step further and therefore has decided to start a compost bin for all of our food scraps. We will use the compost to nourish our vegetable garden. If you have a large, old compost bin that you don’t use, we would appreciate the donation. You can contact Mrs West by email at jwest@bps.sa.edu.au

3P have also been working on putting sustainability into practice. Here is what they would like to share with you.

3P's Sustainability Focus

Did you know that in Japan every house has eight bins? In 3P we have 4 bins; one for paper, a Bokashi bin for food scraps, one for soft plastics and one for general waste. We even have a worm farm that has over 1,000 worms in it. We have discovered that worms are fussy and not all food scraps can be given to the worms but anything that we don’t give the worms goes into our Bokashi bin. The worm juice we collect from our worm farm will be used to fertilise the plants growing in the garden beds on the back oval.

3P has entered the Primary School into the Colgate Community Garden Challenge. We are asking everyone to help us by bringing in oral care items including old toothbrushes, empty toothpaste tubes and empty floss containers. Each item is worth 10 points and the more points we get, the better chance we have of winning. Prizes include 5 x recycled community garden sets and cool upcycled pencil cases packs for our school. You can even vote for Blackfriars online to help us earn Garden Points by visiting https://www.terracycle.com.au/en-AU/contests/colgategardenvoting. All oral care items can be dropped off at the 3P classroom in our Community Garden Challenge box and we will be collecting until the 31st October.

Fundraising

Year 5/6V have been doing some great work to raise money for St Vincent de Paul. We congratulate their hard work in raising over $300.

St Vincent de Paul Charity Day

On the 23 May 2018, the 5/6V class had a charity day to support St Vincent de Paul Society. We raised a total of $750 and will be donating $305 dollars to St Vincent de Paul. There were a variety of fun games and foods on offer that range between 20 cents to 2 dollars:

  • Eat-a-Spoon
  • Nerf Elite
  • Paper Toss Xtreme
  • Hoop it
  • Buzz it
  • Cupcakes
  • Foosball
  • Circle it
  • Shooter Kings
  • Drawings of Fury

These games were all hand-made and baked by the students. We learned a lot about finance and budgeting skills, how to advertise and facilitate a successful business as young entrepreneurs. After this charity day, we needed to present our pitch to the Sharks as a part of the Shark Tank - Religion and Digital Technology Project. We enjoyed being the Sharks (investors) as well as presenting our ideas to others having watched Shark Tank in class for three weeks.  We would like to take this opportunity to thank the students and teachers for their support and participation.
