Year 10 Digital Photography

Monarto Zoo Excursion

On 23 May, Mr Stanborough’s Year 10 Digital Photography class travelled to Monarto Zoo to capture images of amazing animals for their assignment. The assignment required students to create an item promoting Monarto Zoo. My focus was African and Endangered Carnivores. Accompanying our class on the trip was Mr Ngeno and Miss Pearce, who are both avid photographers.

Throughout the day we got close to various animals while we learnt about where they came from, how they behaved, and other interesting facts about them from the personal tour guide. During our time at the zoo we could photograph many rare and amazing animals including lions, cheetahs, rhinos, meerkats, giraffes, zebras, hyenas, ostrich, kangaroos, emus and many more. Animals that I wanted to get images of were the lions, the cheetahs and the African wild dog.

The images of the lions were stunning, but the males weren’t released at the time, so, I had to stick with the images of female lions which didn’t match my design brief. We got to take the Blackfriars school bus into all the enclosures making it very exciting, easy to move around and we could take as much time as we liked as there weren’t many other tour groups on the day.

Overall the excursion was a fantastic experience which allowed us to spend time with our peers and develop our photography skills in a fun and informative manner. I am excited now at the opportunity to developing my promotional material using my own photographs from the Monarto Zoo.
