'Under the Sea' Primary Mosaic and Ceramic Mural

'Under the Sea' Primary Mosaic and Ceramic Mural

As you walk to the Primary School from the front of the school you will notice a new colourful addition to the wall in-between the primary office area and the senior library.

This large tactile and colourful creative collaborative artwork work is the result of two years of hard work from Years 3 and 4 primary students and their teachers. In 2016 visual art students spent the year creating artworks on the theme of the ocean. After learning about the ocean and sea life in an excursion to the Marine Discovery Centre we created designs for our own ceramic fish, which then became integrated with wave forms and shapes in a mosaic background. Students considered composition, contrast, colour, texture and tone when creating their composition, not only on the individual panels but as a whole. They had a great time smashing tiles, and learning the intricacies of the skills and techniques needed to be successful in ceramics, mosaic and working collaboratively towards a shared goal.

Once the mosaic was finished, each panel was grouted by the art teachers and prepared for instillation. Although this has been a lengthy process we are extremely excited to see it finally up on the wall where the students and school community can enjoy the work.
