YEAR 7 MATHEMATICS – PARENTS NIGHT

On Wednesday September 6th it was pleasing to have twenty Year 7 Parents/Guardians join the current Year 7 Maths teachers to experience “learning in a Mathematics classroom”. The session gave the adults (and some students and their siblings) an opportunity to gain insight into the topic Algebra, and undertake related learning activities.

The evening was broken up into small group activities and allowed those in attendance to witness what their child would experience in an everyday Maths class, while learning Maths themselves!

Here is some feedback from those who attended our Algebra session…

Would you recommend the Parent Night to other parents?                                 Yes (17)  Absolutely (2)  Definitely (1)

How could we improve for next time?

  • Liked it as it was short and sweet; group rotation worked well; great ideas; not boring.
  • Everything was great; Liked the small groups and quick activities; I think it was run well and worked very well.
  • I haven’t any suggestions for improvement; I think it was very well done; Do the same again.
  • Recommend to bring your child along as well
  • A longer session (some parts seemed a bit rushed).

In what ways could we further support your child’s learning of Maths?

  • Ask kids to bring some activities home, such as the ones we used tonight to increase the school-home partnership.
  • Learning sheets for students and parents to do @ home together.
  • More nights like this helps.

Thank you to those who attended the evening and also to Robyn Waight (Mathematics Learning Area Leader) and Karen Utber (Assistant Principal) for their assistance with the organisation and running of the evening.

Due to the positive feedback and overall success of the evening, the Year 7 Maths Teachers will be conducting another session in Term 4 on the topic, Measurement. We hope to see even more parents and students involved. Stay tuned for details!
