5/6s Update

Term 4

Term 4 in the 5/6 department is usually our busiest, with a number of long-established events occurring that we hope can continue this time around as well. The year traditionally ends with Graduation, Park to Park, Maths Games Day and whole school transition, or Orientation Day for our grade 6s. We will be able to provide you with more information about these events as we receive more guidelines from the department regarding gathering in large numbers.

This term, our integrated studies unit is ‘Our Place in Space’. The main area that will be explored is the relationship between the Earth, Moon and the Sun. Students will also investigate the geological changes that occur due to extreme weather and explore if humans could survive on other planets.

Our daily literacy sessions continue to support our students by developing their skills to read and comprehend a variety of texts. We will focus on the way we interpret explicit and implied information from narratives, information texts and poetry. The writing process will investigate ‘ideas’and ‘voice’through the 6 +1 Traits of Writing. Students will be developing an anthology of writing to showcase their independent writing choices throughout the semester as part of their end of year digital portfolio.

The focus areas in numeracy will be multiplication and division, data and statistics, measurement, and fractions and decimals. Students will be working on a range of tasks where they can make connections to real life experiences and the integrated studies unit.

When we return to face-face teaching, homework will not be set so that students can re-establish classroom routines after the two terms of remote and flexible learning that we’ve had this year.

Kind regards

The Grade 5/6 team
