Science Educational Program - Reptile Encounters

The Year 7s have been learning about ‘Classification’ in Science this term. A special educational program with live Australian animals was organised to emphasise the importance of classification in the real world. Below is a short reflection from two of our students:

On Thursday 26th of November, the Year 7s had a science program from Reptile encounters. Kara, the guest speaker, introduced the students to several animals including stick insects, green tree frogs, a sugar glider, turtle, barking owl, snake, and a crocodile. Interestingly, there was only one invertebrate (the stick insect) presented, even though they make up 90% of the world’s animal species.

All the animals had caused a surprising reaction as many students were scared of a sugar glider. However, they were very enthusiastic about the snake. Many students loved the animals that were brought in and learned new things about them. It was a great opportunity to learn more about the unit the girls had recently covered, Classification. Overall it was very interesting and we enjoyed these up close and personal encounters with these animals.
