HSIE & Languages News

It has been another very busy and productive Term 1 in the HSIE Faculty. It only seems like last week that we were welcoming everyone to the 2022 school year.

Year 12 students are now more than half way through their HSC studies and making great progress through formal assessment tasks and classroom activities. Students need to take a well-deserved break over the holidays, yet understand that this is a wonderful opportunity to complete revision, get a head start on topic summaries, finish outstanding work from Term 1 and complete HSC exam questions for feedback.

Year 11 students have finished their first formal assessment tasks as senior students and their focus has been impressive. It is anticipated that students will maintain this level of commitment as they continue their studies in Ancient History, Business Studies, Geography, Legal Studies and Modern History in Terms 2 and 3.

Congratulations to our Mock Trial on a successful first round against St Edwards College, Gosford. Our team consisted of Larna Homer, Vesna Bakarich-Davies , Kasm Al Rubayi, Mason Bruinning, Ebonnie Tiffany and Julie Fabroa. Huge thanks to Mrs Kostalas for the support and expertise she provides to competitors. Best of luck against Lake Munmorah High School in the next round in Week 10.

Year 10 students have responded well to our study of Genocide and the Holocaust in History over Term 1. While this subject matter is often difficult for students to comprehend, teachers have been impressed with the level of engagement and maturity shown by all students.

Year 9 Geography students have focused on Sustainable Biomes this term. Students have completed a research task on crops/resources such as cotton, cocoa, palm oil and rice. Teachers have been impressed with the focus shown by students and their ability to follow the criteria for the task. However, it is vital that all students make effort to complete each section of a task by the due date.

Year 8 students have researched some creative solutions to water shortages as part of their study of Water in the World this term. Students were asked to research water use, availability and quality within a least-developed nation.

Year 7 students have settled well into their study of Geography in Semester One and their research, as well as multi-modal presentation of their work on geomorphic hazards has been impressive. Students were able to follow the research scaffold as part of their preliminary research and produce outstanding presentations, with many incorporating images, animation and video into their work.

A reminder for all students for Term 2 – teachers in HSIE expect you to complete quality work each lesson. It is vital that you come prepared for learning. Each lesson you must have your book and writing equipment with you.

Wishing you all the very best for the upcoming holidays
