Art Academy Exhibition - Patricia Piccinini
The Art Academy visited Patricia Piccinini’s Exhibition ‘Rising’ located at the Flinders Street Ballroom on the 23rd of March. The exhibition was displayed on the top floor of the building, separated by multiple rooms that led to the old Flinders Ballroom. Past Academy student and Arts Captain, Ivan Jeldres who is one of the current Art Ambassadors for the exhibition, led us through and explained Piccinini's journey in art. The elaborate architecture created cohesion with her artworks, accentuating the beauty in the relation between art and the world. Piccinini’s appreciation for nature was featured in each of her works as they often reflected common animals that she adapted in her surrealist style.
The exhibition reflected Piccinini's love of beauty in the rawness and natural state of her pieces. Her artworks depicted a hyper realistic and surrealist style in both people and the supernatural species she created. The view of beauty was displayed to contrast the unrealistic high beauty standards of society and to eliminate society’s definition of ‘normal’. The exhibition consisted of installations, sculptures and media; which included a 10 minute short film representing the relationship between human and nature. She also created a 2 minute short film that drew a large reaction from everyone as it displayed an adaptation on birth, this was very confronting as it contained realistic looking skin that had a seeming type of embryo slowly emerging. Each exhibit was unexpected for many of the girls and I as we often felt uncomfortable and claustrophobic at the confrontation of the unknown. Ivan mentioned that Piccinini’s pieces were made out of rubber and all the hair in her artworks used real human hair, which was quite startling.
The exhibition was an eye opening experience as we were able to experience a different style of art and create a new view on the way we appreciate art. It also allowed us to view part of Melbourne’s historical Flinders Street building and see the contrast between past and present Melbourne. It was an overall enjoyable experience and we all left with a new perception of beauty and were able to understand its relationship between nature
