Senior Soccer

Off to a flying start in Term 2

We have had a flying start to the term and the Sport Department is buzzing.  It was great to see so many senior students competing in our Division Carnival Day on Friday.  Some teams have automatically advanced through to the Regional round due to no other schools entering teams. These include Senior Boys Hockey, Senior Girls Soccer, Senior Girls AFL. All will be competing either later this term or early next term.

Senior Boys Soccer

Friday 29th April saw the Senior Boys Soccer team make their way to DISC for the District competition to play two matches (of 30 minute halves) against Thornbury and Lalor.

First up was the game against Thornbury, who were the more fancied out of the two schools. Seb Rio opened the scoring just 3 minutes into the game to give Northcote an early lead. A great header by Koh Nakajima at 26’ steadied the ship further, and another Koh goal at 28’ saw Northcote head into the break 3-0 leaders. Clearing the bench to give some of the less experienced players a run almost proved costly, with Thornbury scoring at the 42’, 46’ and 50’ mark to tie the match up 3-3 with 10 minutes to go. A late goal by Kai Shookry at 57’ saw Northcote secure the victory 4-3.

A win against Lalor was required to win through to the next round and the boys delivered. True to the first game, Northcote came out firing with Matt Stephens kicking a goal with the opening play in the 1st minute. After a late tackle in the box, a penalty was awarded to Northcote who called in then-keeper Sam McShane to take the kick, which unfortunately went over the crossbar. Two Vanya Swinnerton goals followed at 22’ and 26’ including a neat chip from close to half way over the goalie who was out of position. Late goals from Josh Gentile (29’) and Kalam Ross (30’) saw Northcote go into half-time 5-0 up. Finbarr D’Crus opened the scoring in the second half with a neat dribble and finish around two players, followed shortly by another goal from Matt. With defenders pushing up and everyone wanting a piece of the action, Lalor managed 2 quick goals at 52’ and 53’ to get the score to 7-2. However, Northcote proved too good, finishing off the second half strongly with back to back goals to Tom Barth, and Sam redeemed himself with a 59’ goal as the cherry on top. Final score 10-2.

Overall, a great day with fantastic sportsmanship. Darcy Allen, Vanya and Seb lead through the midfield all day, while Koh was solid up front as well as captaining and organising substitutions to ensure everyone had a fair go.

Senior Badminton

The team of 5 from Northcote played Thornbury, Lalor, Lalor North and Reservoir on Friday. Each round they played six matches against the one school consisting of four singles games and two doubles. Although Northcote didn't win a round against a school, they still won plenty of singles and doubles games throughout the day. It was fantastic seeing our Northcote students showing true resilience and were not willing to give up.

Senior Basketball

Our senior Girls team had a great run, winning all of their games, scoring strongly across the day and with only 13 points scored against them in the whole competition. There were great contributions from all, with a special mention to Nessa Cooney Hunt for playing so well, getting lots of rebounds and a few buckets despite never having played basketball before.

In the boys section we had two teams competing.  Our Yr 11 team came third in their pool after having some competitive matches against Lalor, SEDA and Thornbury.

The Year 12 Team We were lucky enough to have ex student Lachie Mckain help out with coaching. Their competition came down to wire and eventually came runners up after an overtime buzzer beater.

Senior Boys AFL

The Northcote Senior boys footy team travelled to CT Barling reserve last Friday to take on Thornbury and Reservoir for a place in the regional finals. The first game was a hard fought battle against Thornbury with both sides trading goals, but in the end Thornbury managed to take the most of their set shot opportunities as they defeated Northcote by 9 points. The second match against Reservoir got off to a slow start with Reservoir kicking the first goal, but after that Northcote responded with authority kicking 8 of the next 9 goals to run out 38 point winners. Leading goalkicker on the day was Lachie Kanizay with 2 goals. Best players included captains, Finn Andrews-Frazer, Max Daphne along with Seb Suarez, Jack Oldfield and Leo Chiappini. Congrats to all the year 12’s who played their final football game for the school, it was a shame we couldn’t make it through to the next round.
