Classics Trip to Canberra

Exploring ancient Greek artifacts

After studying the stories of Ancient Greece, the Greek heroes, poets, and playwrights, the senior classics students were given the opportunity to explore some of Greece’s amazing artifacts up close and in person. From vases that depict the feats of Herakles and Achilles, to statues that highlight what life in Ancient Greece was like for men and women, we were able to examine the artifacts and bring the stories and art we have studied to life.

On Thursday the Senior classics students left Melbourne for Canberra to experience a world-renowned museum exhibition on loan to the National Museum. Ancient Greeks: Athletes, Warriors and Heroes explored competition through sport, politics, drama, music, and warfare, illuminated by more than 170 objects from the British Museum. At the museum our group received a guided tour through the gallery examining the marble sculptures and clay vases, our guide introduced us to the finer details of each piece of art before allowing us time to explore the exhibit on our own.

Over the 3 days we were given opportunity to explore Canberra’s CBD as we stayed at a nearby youth hostel. Throughout the weekend we engaged in friendly competition, whether it be at the pool table or bowling alley, and we tested our wit in the escape room, with both groups escaping with over ten minutes to spare. Whilst we enjoyed all the activities throughout our time in Canberra, and the exhibit at the museum was truly one of a kind, it was being on camp with our friends and teachers that ultimately made our experience.
