Learning & Teaching

This term our Inquiry Unit is based around both Chemical and Biological Sciences.

Chemical Sciences focusing on an understanding in the composition and behaviour of substances.

Biological Sciences focusing on understanding living things.

There is certainly going to be some exciting things happening across our school this Term:

Junior Grades

The Years Prep to Two students are learning about ‘Living things and how these things grow'. This includes understanding that living things (both animals and plants) have a variety of external features and live in different places where their basic needs, including food, water and shelter, are met.

They will be learning about animals, in particular, their unique features and what their adaptations are that help them in their environment to grow and reproduce. This includes looking at the life cycle of insects too!

Middle Grades

Our Years 3 and 4 scientists are going to be investigating changes between solid and liquid forms when heat is introduced to experiments. They will also be exploring how changes from solid to liquid and liquid to solid can help us recycle materials. The students will be learning how to use formal measurements in the collection and recording of observations and using both tables and column graphs to represent data and identify patterns in the results they collect.

They are also going to be busy investigating ‘Living things’ and how these can be grouped by specific features as well as distinguished from non-living things.

Senior Grades

In Chemical Science, the students are learning about solids, liquids and gases. This includes how they behave in different ways and have observable properties that help to classify them. They will be investigating how changes made to some materials can be reversible and include melting, freezing and evaporation.

In Biological Science, the students will learn about the growth and survival of living things and how their environment directly affects this. They will also understand the structural features and adaptations all living things have for them to survive and thrive in their natural habitat and environment.
