Sports Update
SAPSASA Cricket
On Friday 4th November, our boys SAPSASA Cricket team played in the Quarter finals of the knockout large schools metro competition against Burnside Primary School.
After quite a wet week, there were doubts about getting the match underway at all. Surprisingly, we were greeted by a beautiful sunny morning and warm 22 degrees celcius.
Burnside won the toss and elected to bowl first. Our openers (Chanuga and Emad) started very brightly and built a strong opening partnership. Both boys played their shots and hit the bad ball when the opportunity arose and ran extremely well between the wickets. Unfortunately, we lost Emad out bowled for 19 with our total on 1/44 in the 8th over. Seth then joined Chanuga and by the halfway 10-over mark in our batting innings, we were going very well with the score at 1/67, over a run a ball.
Seth and Chanuga continued to bat well, with Chanuga eventually retiring with a brilliant 25 and Seth, unfortunately, being caught just shy of retiring for 21. The Burnside team then tightened their bowling and fielding efforts and restricted our scoring in the final overs of our innings. We eventually finished 4/93 after our 20 overs and posted a very competitive total which would require them to bat well to chase down the runs.
In the field, we started well and bowled tightly to start the innings. We created opportunities that we were unlucky not to have go to hand and be caught by our fielders. Both Diesel and Seth both beautifully with the new ball and Seth picked up the opening wicket with a great catch taken by our wicketkeeper Reuben to bring about the wicket.
Seth finished with outstanding figures of 1/3 off 3 overs and was the pick of the Magill bowlers.
At the halfway point we had restricted Burnside to 1/43 after 10 overs and the game was delicately poised and in the balance.
All of our bowlers put in a great effort and bowled with great discipline against a strong Burnside batting lineup. We continued to create chances for catches and runouts that on a different day, may have brought about wickets. All of the boys put in a great team performance and played the game in the right spirit. Some big hitting towards the back end of the innings saw Burnside pass our total with just under two overs to spare.
I wish to thank all of the boys for their efforts this year in cricket and for their teamwork, sportsmanship and attitude. It was a pleasure to coach the boys and see them achieve some great results and progress to the quarter-finals in the competition. This has been another good year for SAPSASA cricket at Magill and with half of the team available to play again next year as Year 6s, we will look to continue to build and develop.
Finally, a big thank you to all parents for your support this year and for helping to pick up and dropoff your children from training and matches. Many thanks!
