Year 10 'Be Heard' – with Ms Matheson

This year 'Be Heard' has been working on the design and creation of a firepit for Windermere. The students in Year 10 began the project in Term 1, drew up a folio, created a ½ scale model of the design and then pitched their plan to the TREE, TAS and the Learning Support departments in a bid to obtain funding for the materials.

Next, Be Heard teamed up with Mr Lun to work collaboratively in the Metal workshop throughout Term 3 and 4 to finalise their product, and the finished design went out to Windermere last week.

This project provided students with a contextualised, authentic learning experience that enabled them to create a multifaceted firepit that can be used to produce heat, cook on, is aesthetically pleasing, and will surely become a place to gather around during events held at Windermere for years to come.

I am very proud of the students in 10BH, their hard work and dedication are evident from the finished product:

Flora of the Wolaroi Campus

Nina Smedley

The TREE team has finalised a project that has identified and mapped the flora of the Wolaroi campus. The collaboration was with the Rotary Club, Malcolm Campbell and our students. Trees were identified, mapped, and published into a booklet. Year 10 students (Iona Anderson and Nina Smedley) designed the plaques for the trees and Mr Tony Zola laser printed them. Currently students can scan the QR code so they can participate in a self-guided tour of the campus flora but it will soon be available to all.

The project has been ongoing since 2021, with contributions from Geography classes both this year and last. Students in Mr Callaghan’s class last year got to enjoy small class excursions to Cook Park to see examples of what our signs should look like, and how Malcom’s brilliant collection of knowledge was utilised in creating a space that is both educational and filled with beautiful flora and fauna. We were also so privileged to have Malcolm join us, to create a database of all the wonderful tree species around the campus. Malcom has been the driving force of this project; without his extraordinary knowledge we wouldn’t have been able to progress as far as we have.

Just last week, Kinross had a visit from Malcom Campbell and his daughter, project sponsors, Chris Gryllis and Geoff Gale, as well as Len Banks, President of Rotary Club of Orange. They were shown the progress of the project on a walk around the campus. Year 10 and 11 students helped guide our visitors around, as well as Mrs Gavin and Mr Callaghan. The awful weather of the past week miraculously cleared up, leaving us with beautiful weather to showcase our school grounds.

TREE Intern Report: Cadence Austin

I applied for a position in the TREE Internship program during Term 2 of this year. I was fortunate enough, that after my interview I was chosen for a spot to work with Holly Manning, who works in PR and marketing.  After my pitch meeting with Holly, I have been working with her at McGrath Real Estate once a week.

Holly and the team at McGrath have been extremely welcoming. Holly has allowed me to gain a broader insight on PR and marketing. I have been working on many projects with Holly from posting on the McGrath Instagram page to helping with organising stalls and Orange Open Gardens and the field days. I have been able to understand marketing and PR much deeper since I began with Holly. I have also been able to broaden my knowledge on Real Estate and the marketing behind the selling of houses which came as a bonus.

As part of the internship program, we have been tasked with a final project to complete relating to our internship. I have decided to do the marketing and PR for the Windermere Open Day in 2023. Holly and I have begun brainstorming ideas and I have had meeting with both Mrs Gavin and Ms Youll to discuss my project. I soon plan to meet with the Head of Marketing to discuss my ideas and begin putting up posts about the Open Day. I am excited to start on the project with Holly and the school's marketing team to create an amazing Open Day for Windermere.

Overall, I have had an amazing experience with Holly so far and can’t wait to continue with her for the rest of the term. It has been a very rewarding experience for me in many ways as I had never really thought about marketing the way I do now, and I think the internship is a great experience to have. I am so grateful to have been given the opportunity to work with Holly through this program and can’t wait to see what else I learn and achieve with the remaining time I have left with Holly.
