27/10/22: School Shoes

“Never say never, because limits, like fears, are often just illusions”
– Michael Jordan

One may say wearing school shoes on the basketball court is a limit.

A limit to others may be oppositional height.

To the KWS Lakers, these factors are no limits. These factors are just mere illusions; sideline noise that the Lakers can channel out to get the job done on court.

Thursday October 27 saw a battle on court that will last for the ages.

With the opposition coming out with a quick attack strategy, a few early buckets from the team in orange made the scoreboard at the end of the first quarter misrepresent the tenacity that the boys in blue showed throughout the first stint. Some fresh legs and review of game plan ensured the Lakers continued to rise to the challenge that was presented to them. With conversion when needed, the scoreboard continued to close throughout the game in the Lakers’ favor.

Displaying magnificent teamwork and defense, the KWS Lakers have put a stamp on this competition. This great team may be yet to claim the bickies when the buzzer rings, but in the end, it is the tortoise who wins the race.

Thanks to all team members who laced up and showed up today, regardless of whether these shoes were ‘Air Jordans’ or black leather Clarkes. You proved that any perceived limits are just mere illusions and certainly made the KWS community proud of your ability to take on feedback, train hard and continue to improve not only in skill, but also character.

Australian Women’s Rugby 7s Visit

On Wednesday 26 October we had some famous visitors to the junior school: four players from the Australian Women’s Rugby 7s team joined us for the afternoon to run tag rugby games and ball skills.

Even sporting a moon boot because of an injury, the day before, the captain of the team, Charlotte was generous with her time, sharing her knowledge and signing lots of autographs throughout the afternoon.

The Women’s Aussie 7s team is currently number one in the world, having won 38 of their last 43 games. They have also recently won Commonwealth gold and finished first in all major 7’s tournaments around the world, including London and Dubai.

We are extremely lucky to have had them visit us and hopefully they have inspired some of you to take up touch or rugby in years to come.

Western Schools Touch Competition

Two of our Year 6 teams competed in the Western Schools touch tournament last Tuesday 25 October.

Both teams performed extremely well in wet and windy conditions. The girls team flew the flag for Kinross Wolaroi winning 2 and losing 2, narrowly missing out on the semifinals. The boys won 1 and lost 3 in a tough pool.

Both teams should be proud of their efforts in a highly competitive arena.

Thank you to Miss Hazelton for coaching and to the Kinross Wolaroi drivers for transporting both teams to and from the competition.

U13 Cricket

On Saturday 5 November the KWS U12s cricket team played their first game of cricket for the season, due to wet weather. They pulled off an outstanding performance using GRIT and determination, which led to great bowling, amazing batting, and an incredible amount of teamwork. They were under pressure to begin with losing the toss and being sent into bat but with Ben Chambers’ and Sam Commins’ awesome partnership it put the team in a great position. They went into bowling with 135 runs under their belt. To top off the performance the team bowled outstandingly, with Lucas Choi taking three wickets and Vivaan Desai with two wickets. It was a great performance all around giving KWS a convincing win for the start of the season.
