'Girls in STEM' works in the Bendigo region to engage and support two Grade 6 girls from selected schools to come to The Discovery Centre. Every month they explore a new area of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) and they form friendships across schools. These girls are selected for their leadership skills and interest in science, and as part of the program will be running science workshops and becoming STEM role models in their schools.
This year, Elise and Jessica have been participating in this initiative from our school. Yesterday, they shared some of their key learnings with us. Elise and Jessica gave the Grade 5/6 students a brief: they had to design something that could hover in the Wind Tunnel.
Two lucky 2023 Grade 6 girls will also have the opportunity to be involved in this program.
Just a reminder that we are asking that those student who have not spent their whole primary schooling at SGPS bring in their school photos from previous schools so we can add them to the slideshow.
Bendigo Community Health Services will be taking two 90 minute puberty sessions for our Grade 6 students on the Tuesday and Wednesday of Week 9. The sessions will involve the following concepts:
Session 1:
Session 2:
A note went out a couple of weeks ago about the 2023 Grade 6 Commemorative T-shirts. At this stage, there is no payment, it is just name details, sizes and quantities. If you could get them back sooner rather than later, that would be awesome. I will send the names off shortly and then we will have a design to work with.
This fortnight in Reading, we will be looking at strategies from the Response to Reading section of our CRAFT Menu. We will be looking at 'add your own ideas to the supporting evidence' and 'use paragraphing when completing your response'. Responding effectively to texts is an important skill and one that will only become more important as students progress through to secondary school.
In Writing, we will be focusing on letter writing. For the Big Write in Week 8, the Grade 5 students will write an application letter for School Captain, Vice-Captain and/or speech for House Captain. The Grade 6 students will write a letter to a teacher reflecting on great learning and great memories.
In Mathematics, we will be doing some revision of the topics of money, fractions and problem solving. These skills are life-long skills that are important in day-to-day life. These topics will also come in very useful with our upcoming Consumerism Topic project.
