Around the Classrooms

Year Prep!

What a busy term for the Prep students!

As they come to the end of their first year at school we would like to celebrate what they have been working on recently.

English

Students have been learning to read and spell CCVC/CVCC words e.g slip/mend. Through explicit teaching and a range of activities such as how many sounds?, sound detective- find my missing sound, Hot Potato and Bingo Bus students have practiced and embedded their letter and sound knowledge. In writing students are using a self checklist to help them be independent successful writers.

Mathematics

Students have been learning about a variety of number concepts by using playing cards. In the game Salute they are looking at the missing addends of a sum. The captain calls out the sum (total) of the two numbers. The students need to work out the card they have by finding the difference between their partner's card and the sum e.g. Hector knows that ? + 5= 14 and uses number strategies such as count up to (6 to 14) or count back from (14 to get to the number 5) to work out that he has a 9 card.

Other games include Number Battle (the player with the highest sum of their 2 cards will win the cards) and Make 10 (making combinations that add to 10).

Integrated

In the Integrated unit ‘Invention and Inspiration’, students have been looking at how they can become conscious consumers who make good choices for their environment.

Students thought how they could reuse some objects that would otherwise find themselves in the recycle or rubbish bins. Students designed their own planter that they would make using a plastic bottle. They then made their design, added soil and cat grass seeds and they are currently growing beautifully in the classroom.

We found a tub of old and broken crayons in the classroom and we discussed what we could do with them. We decided we could make new and exciting crayons with them by breaking them up, placing the small bits of crayons into moulds and melting them in the oven. Students loved doing this and decided they would gift them to the Kinder children who would be starting Prep next year. This melted our hearts!

What a wonderful year the Prep students have had. They have grown and learnt so much. We couldn’t be prouder!
