Year 6 News

On Friday the 11November, we walked with Ms Carter, from school down Reserve Road to the Memorial-Community Forecourt and Cenotaph behind the library. We represented Beaumaris North Primary School at the public Remembrance Day Ceremony. We arrived at 10:45am, and the ceremony started at about 10:55am but all in all it only went for 20 minutes.

There were many people from the public in attendance and some had medals on the left side of their chest. They were ex-servicemen of the army. A man named John ran most of the ceremony, but there were also other people who read out poems and other items including a piece about what Remembrance Day means and the significance of the poppy.

Sophie Keogh, one of our past Vice School Captains, opened the service with the Welcome to Country. John read out the Ode of Remembrance, and we had to echo the last line, “Lest We Forget”. At 10:59am we were asked to ‘Stand To’ and at exactly 11:00am the Last Post played, there was a minute of silence and the Reveille played afterwards. We were then told to ‘Stand Down’.

The first poem read was “In Flanders Fields” by John McCrae. Next was the reading of “We Shall Keep Faith” by Moina Michael. After that, the “Remembrance Day Address” by William Shields was read. The next item read was Kemal Ataturk’s ANZAC tribute. The final item was “The Lord’s Prayer” read by Reverand Bill Pugh Club Chaplain.

All in all the ceremony only went for 20 minutes, After all the poems were read, groups of important people from the RSL and the ommunity were called up to place their wreaths on the step of the “Lest We Forget” plaque. Also representing their schools at the ceremony were captains from Stella Maris, Beaumaris, Black Rock and Cheltenham Primary. We were called up in the last group. We made our way to a table where all the wreaths were and collected ours. We carried it up to the step and placed it down along with the others. We all stood still for a few seconds to acknowledge the people who fought in the wars and we then made our way back to our seats. That was the conclusion of the ceremony.

We were invited to the morning tea, served in the Senior Citizens Centre, and we all enjoyed the delicious food provided by the Women’s Auxiliary group. The brownie was particularly good!

It was a privilege to be invited to the service and an honour to go on behalf of the BNPS students.

Year 6 Beaumaris North Archibald Prize

On Monday, the Year 6 students had the opportunity to view and appreciate all their creative masterpieces with the artist Geoff La Gerche. Geoff La Gerche has had a number of works hung in the Archibald Prize and his works often use the grid technique, which is the technique the year 6 students have used to create their self -portraits. He discussed how impressive all the  portraits are this year and how it will be difficult to choose the winners. This week whilst the Year 6 students are on camp the whole school will be voting to help with the final decision on the winners.
