ALL SAINTS AND ALL SOULS

A long-standing tradition in the Church is to use the month of November to remember those who have died. In the Northern Hemisphere, perhaps it was due to the falling leaves and the colder temperatures that made thoughts turning to death necessary to bring us new life. In our Southern Hemisphere, we can see new life budding as we emerge from the cold and wet of our winter. Regardless - we remember our loved ones because life has changed, not ended.

As we celebrate All Saints’ Day and All Souls’ Day, we remember all those who have died. We pray for those people who lived among us and somehow touched our lives. We especially remember our family and friends, our neighbours and co-workers and we open our hearts in a special way to those who mourn the dead.

On All Saints' Day (Tuesday 1 November), we remembered all those who have died in the Christian faith - those known to us, those unknown and those we officially call a Saint. On All Souls' Day (Wednesday 2 November) we prayed for all souls (everywhere), but especially those from our family and friends. Prayers were offered for those in purgatory (on their way to Heaven).

Our Chapel has a Book of Names, in which all members of our community can write the names of relatives to be remembered. This will be placed on the Altar during weekday masses as a sign of remembrance and prayer.
