Year 8 STEAM Challenge Day

Year 8 STEAM Challenge Day

Alice James, Academic Dean of Science

On 22nd November, Year 8 students took part in the STEAM Challenge Day. The purpose of this day was for students to continue exploring the integration of Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Mathematics while developing their creativity, collaboration, critical thinking and communication skills.

Initially, students had the option of choosing to take part in the Technology group, the Art group or the Maths/Science group.

The Art and Technology groups created a STEAM mural. The Art students designed and painted the STEAM letters, where each letter represented its subject area.

Technology students worked with micro-bits to code interactive games that went on the letters. Different groups chose to include a variety of  interactive parts, including flashing lights, pong games, speakers that play sounds and even a ping pong ball firer!

These will be combined onto the letters to produce an amazing interactive mural – keep your eyes out around the School!

The Maths/Science group worked through a series of challenges designed to develop their spatial and building skills, as well as mathematical reasoning and problem solving skills. In the morning, they took part in the Billy Cart Challenge, which required them to design, build and race a billy cart.

They then tested their team work and critical thinking by completing the marshmallow challenge – building the highest spaghetti tower possible that would hold a marshmallow. In the afternoon, a presenter from the Mathematical Association of Victoria coordinated a range of maths games and puzzles.

Thank you to all staff involved. The students all had a fantastic day and were able to demonstrate some very impressive STEAM skills!

Senior School Leaders Induction

On 26 November, we held the Senior School Leaders Induction Assembly. It was a wonderful way to begin the week. Congratulations everyone!

Year 10 Digital Technologies ICAS Competition

On 29 November, Johnny Barkoczy and Alastair Locke received their medals for getting the top marks in the Year 10 Digital Technologies ICAS Competition.

Only nine students received this medal in the whole country and only three in Victoria. Congratulations Johnny and Alastair on your incredible achievement!
