On the Character Trait of Reflectiveness

Matt Brinson, Head of Senior School

The character trait for this semester is Reflectiveness. Now other than the obvious capacity of a surface, such as a mirror, to produce a reflection, reflectiveness can be defined as a state of serious thinking, quiet thought or contemplation. For our students it means to think back, learn from their experiences and apply what they have learnt to different situations in the future.

We can apply reflectiveness during or after any situation, whether it be a test, a sporting match, a music performance or an uncomfortable social interaction .

Reflectiveness is not about describing an event in simply narrative terms. It's about thinking deeply about it so that we are able to understand it more thoroughly. It's about capturing our thoughts, understandings and critical insights.

It might include one or all of the following:

  • Taking a 'step back' – does the situation look different?
  • Replaying an action or interaction to make sure nothing has been overlooked.
  • Being brutally honest with ourselves about our part in something.
  • Evaluating everything available about an experience.
  • Trying to find a clear way through something complicated.

There is already a lot to reflect on from this year -  the change in winning Houses in House Swimming and Athletics; how those  who found mid-year exams stressful could change this in the future;  and the Years 11/12 Formal, which was only last week.

Reflecting on last Friday night, it was so wonderful to see our students dressed up, interacting and behaving like the mature and confident young men and women that we all hope a Kilvington education enables them to be.

So the next time we have an argument with a friend, are late for school, mistime a pass in a basketball or netball game, or feel anxious during a test, we can try and be reflective, and see what adjustments can be made to improve the situation or change our actions for next time.

Participating in Pilot - Early Learning Stem Australia

We are delighted to be participating in a pilot for the government initiative, Early Learning Stem Australia (ELSA), promoting the importance of science, engineering, maths, technology, art and design in pre-school education.

We are one of only 20 schools in Victoria, and 100 in the whole country to be involved.
