Year 8 Camp/Soar Program

This year 8 camp was very enjoyable. After getting off the bus in Warrnambool we received our cabin groups and unpacked. We drove to the supermarket and took turns shopping for our breakfasts. We got back to the caravan park, unpacked our groceries and got ready for dinner. We went to Images Restaurant where the range of food on offer was exquisite. That night, after dinner, we took a stroll on the beach for a night walk and it was very picturesque. The following day was spent gathering information about the shipwreck coast at the maritime museum, which had a cool light show. The final full day was spent walking around Port Fairy then onto the Twelve Apostles and many photos were taken of the four and a half still standing. That night we went to Aqua Zone for a dip in the pools.

The last day was quite sad, a lot of us quite mad, the bus was calm, a lot of people used lip balm. We arrived back at school and that was pretty cool.

Overall this Year 8 camp was a success.

SOAR ADVENTURES GRAMPIANS HIKING CAMP

SOAR Adventures students recently participated in a successful camp to the Grampians. It included two days of hiking, experiencing and learning about the native flora and fauna and local cultural Aboriginal locations. Evidence of traditional cultural ceremony including scar, birthing trees, water holes and grinding rocks were noticed by our own Aboriginal students Al Coff and Anthony Hansen.

We were very fortunate with favourable weather, and  our camp site was at a picturesque location. Students handled the climbing extremely well, supported each other and learned many outdoor educational, camping and related skills. The first day’s hike involved carrying all camping equipment and food for the day. The second day was a challenge hiking up the steep Mt Rosea where they experienced beautiful scenic views, and jumping and exploring around spectacular rock formations. Our final day included a visit to the local Aboriginal Brambuk Centre where students learned about historical and educational aspects of the local Indigenous Culture.

This was the final program for the year and acknowledgements to the 20 SOAR 2019 student participants who have developed and enhanced their life skills, team building, leadership and resilience throughout the year.

A special thanks to our SOAR Adventures organising and supervising team Dave Tolputt, Trevor Butcher, James Chaffey, Kathy Evans, Kathie Williamson and Marg Peck, Craig Williams, Judith Mclean and all other members who have assisted with years previous camps and personal development, leadership and resilience sessions.  As a result of this team, we had a very successful year!
