Staughton Effective Learner
Staughton Effective Learners are…
- Responsible: they assess their own learning progress;
- Resilient: they seek feedback and new challenges; and
- Reflective: they set their own goals.
In order for our students to be lifelong learners, we know we must set them up to learn effectively without us. The Staughton definition of an effective learner is someone who is responsible, resilient and reflective. We would like all of our students to be familiar with this language and to be able to explain the behaviours of effective learners. Alongside their teachers, students should be able to guide their parents through a discussion about their learning at Parent/Teacher/Student Conferences during the year.
When teachers conduct learning conferences with students they are using the language of the 3Rs (responsible, resilient and reflective) to prompt students to do the same. Posters are also up in classrooms as a visual reminder to students of the behaviours we would like them to exhibit. During learning conferences, students use their unit rubrics to discuss learning progress with their teacher; the 3Rs are summarised at the bottom of the rubrics as another visual reminder.
At our Awards Night last December, the students who received awards for effort and achievement embodied the characteristics of Staughton Effective Learners. In deciding which students to nominate, teachers asked themselves which students had been approaching them for learning conferences and, during these conferences, which students could show clear evidence of their learning progress and that they were responding to previous feedback.
Parents could support effective learning by using the 3Rs when talking to their children about their day at school. For example, you could ask about the learning goals they have set while conferencing with their teacher using a unit rubric.
Thanks for your support.
