Principal's Report

Welcome Back
I hope everyone has had a happy and relaxing Christmas break. We are looking forward to the 2016 school year.
At Staughton we expect all students to demonstrate at least a year’s growth in their learning every year. Our OnDemand literacy and numeracy testing in 2015 shows that the vast majority of students are meeting or exceeding one year’s growth. We are very excited about these results!
We work hard with all students to improve them as Staughton Effective Learners. This means they are:
- responsible (to assess their own learning progress)
- reflective (to set their own goals)
- resilient (to seek feedback and new challenges, and to persevere)
We have had some real success with students increasing their effort and initiating learning conferences with teachers to get feedback. We have also been pleased with the increase in attendance at our parent, teacher and student conferences in 2015. We look forward to this continuing in 2016.
At Staughton, we continually work to provide a broad experience for our students. This allows them to achieve academic and co-curricular success, as well as to participate in community service. We are proud of the accomplishments of our students in all these areas. Highlights from 2015 include:
- An improvement in our VCE median score;
- NAPLAN reading improving faster than the state average between years 7 to 9;
- A successful season of shows in our whole school musical performance of Grease;
- VCAL fundraising resulting in the donation of a sleigh filled with toys to the Smith Family;
- Regular success in interschool debating at St. Bernard’s College in Essendon;
- Our sports program, where the highlights were again the Athletics and Swimming Carnivals;
- Students fundraising to go on a World Challenge overseas trip to Borneo;
- Staughton musicians performing at the Fatality Free Friday event in Melton, whilst student leaders accepted pledges from drivers to be safe on the roads; and
- Community activities and fundraising run by our Year 9 Youth Empowerment Process (YEP) class.
