St Philomena's vs Moree Secondary College

St Philomena’s mens’ and ladies’ netball teams ran riot against Moree Secondary College last Friday. Both junior teams and the male senior team subjugated their opponents and the senior girls just slipped short of a victory. Some sterling play was seen on the day from all teams and some thrilling contests battled out on the court.

The Year 7/8 male and female teams were the first to take the court and were keen to make a good impression of themselves. A good start would be an understatement as both teams scored within seconds of the starting whistle. Some sharp shooting from the likes of Nicholas Fisher and Clancy Carroll assured that they stayed well ahead throughout the game. Oscar Davis, along with Chloe Brazel, withstood many opposition attacks with their incredible goalkeeping abilities. By the end of the second quarter, Phillies was totally dominating both matches and the opposition was in the horrors. Unfortunately, for MSC, our young men and women kept up their spectacular form as the girls won 13-10 and the boys obliterated all hope of a victory for the opposition, Phillies winning 17-3.

With rain on the way, the senior girls and boys were hurried onto the court and made haste when it came to scoring goals. The Year 9/10 girls' team took the court with mind blowing energy, so much so, passes were thrown out due to the intense pace that no catcher could handle. Maggie Wilton and Shania McMillan did some insane work defending against some skilful play, while Sara Campbell managed to stay on her feet and work with Gemma Mihill to bring the ball from MSC’s third. Alliyah Davison had to fight with the strong southerly gusts to nail some goals. It wasn’t enough though, as the girls just fell short in the final quarter losing 14-9.

Next to play was Jacob Olsen’s Year 9/10 team. Olsen’s hour and a half of viewing professional play paid off for the boys as they fought hard to maintain possession in the wet and slippery conditions. Phillies showcased its amazing talent as Lucas O’Neile made sure the ball never passed through his area of court without a turnover in his favour and Hez Burling scared all opponents out of his way due to his sheer size and skill. Commonwealth Games 2018 hopeful, Ben Ryan, made sure he was in control throughout the game and he looked in ‘good form’ but neither drizzle nor the opposition had an effect on Royce Carroll as he drained goal after goal which impressed many ardent fans, who cheered the boys to a 10-9 victory.

It was a fantastic day in the end and was thoroughly enjoyed by all. A big thankyou goes to Moree Secondary College for being great competition on the day.  Thanks also to all umpires, especially Miss Humphries and Miss Reed for coaching the teams during preseason and on competition day.
