Year 7 ZOO Reflections

On the Wednesday, 1 May 2019, all year 7 students of St Albans Secondary College had a trip to the Melbourne Zoo. The intention of this excursion was to complete a science investigation on classification of different animals, besides having an enjoyable experience. Students explored the zoo whilst collecting information about a variety of animals, similar to a scavenger hunt. There were many presentations/talks conducted by expert zoo staff based on specific animals throughout the day that students found quite knowledgeable. There were gift shops, a canteen area, many undercover areas and a great vibe of the rainforest. Beautiful indoor areas for aquatic creatures and reptiles were enjoyable too. Some animals seen included: seals, little penguins, snakes, tigers, elephants, butterflies, giraffes, gorillas and many more. Each class had an informative talk about creatures in the wildlife and the high possibility of extinction of some of them. They also found out how to contribute in protecting some of the animals from extinction. In a nutshell, this has been a wonderful, informative and exciting experience for the year 7 community. Big thanks to the year 7 coordinators and teachers for organising this excursion successfully. - Maybel Verma 7D

On Wednesday, 1 May, the Year 7’s went to the Melbourne Zoo to research endangered species. It was called “Save our Species.” We went around the zoo looking for the Asian Elephant, Orang-utan, Gorilla, Snow Leopard, Baw Baw Frog, Philippine crocodile, Lord Howe Stick Insect, and others. A zookeeper took us to the penguin and seal area and explained how and why these animals are endangered or threatened. Overall, we enjoyed the experience. - Kevin Nguyen 7C
