Beacon (Business and Community Partnerships) Breakfast

On Wednesday, 1 May the College held its annual business and Community Partnership Breakfast. The purpose of the breakfast is to network with our business and community partners, and to work with them to develop opportunities for our student’s through things such as Work experience, speed Careering and industry visits.

The guest speaker this year was Ms Jo Spence, who leads our partnership with Western Health at Sunshine Hospital. She was joined by Ms Christina Said, a past VCAL student, as well as present VCAL students.

The breakfast was excellently catered by our Year 11 hospitality class under the guidance of Ms Max Smith. Coffee was provided by the Year 12 VCAL students, showing off their barista skills. The morning was well organised and run by this year’s Year 10 Beacon Ambassadors. Well done to all involved, with special thanks to Ms Lyndo Vo, Mr Adrian McCall and Mr Brendan McFarland for their efforts in organising the event.

Year 9 Careers program

This year for the first time all Year 9 students have been invited to participate in an external careers program, incorporating the Morrisby aptitude test. Students complete an online test in Maths and English classes. This generates a report which forms the basis for a one on one interview with an external consultant. We hope that students use this information to help inform their careers choices leading up to course counselling in term 3.

Special thanks to Ms Cathy Armstrong and her team in organising this large undertaking. If any parents have any questions about this program please don’t hesitate to contact Ms Armstrong in the Careers Office.

Grade 6 taster days

As part of our transition program for Grade 6 students entering Year 7 we two ‘taster’ days last week. These days enabled students to experience classes in a secondary setting, as well as to make connections with each other and their teachers. Thanks to Ms Marlene Cassar, Ms Jennifer Papagianopoulos and the teaching team for their work on this program.

Year 7 Expo

On Tuesday, 7 May we held our annual Year 7 Expo. This evening allows families to learn from their children about what they have been studying in class. It is also an opportunity to meet with classroom teachers in a more informal setting. Well done to the Junior subschool team, led by Ms Lauren Honeycombe, and thanks to all the attending teachers for their support.
