Family fun with Maths

Make my target number

Write down the numbers 1 to 9. Take turns in selecting a target number e.g. 65.

The object of the game is to be the first person to use three of the numbers written down to make the target number using addition or multiplication or both. A number can only be used once. Each person must record their equation e.g. 7 x 8 + 9 = 65. The first person to write down a correct equation wins that round.

Weather Chart

Create and keep a weather chart. Record the daily maximum temperature and graph the results over the month.

Which day had the maximum temperature? Which day had the minimum temperature?

- What was the average temperature?

- What was the temperature on ____ date?

Mapping

When travelling, provide children with a street directory or map and discuss directions. This can even be done at the local shopping center. How can I get to Coles if I begin at Kmart?

When reading and interpreting maps, and driving, point out speed limits, distances to towns, populations in towns etc. When you are driving along, ask 'how far is it to the next light post? the next town? etc.' Calculate the distance travelled or the distance yet to travel. Measure the distances using your speedometer.
